Working Ourselves Out of a Job
We recently developed a custom application for a major, national job matching company. We converted this company from its current source control system (a system which manages all programs and documentation) to a customized solution using a product called Perforce. Our goal was to install new software and simplify the administrative process.
As with all our projects, we initially developed an in-depth understanding of the software by stepping into our clients shoes. In this case we took over the administration, training and support role for the clients 175 users. Next, we implemented a two-tiered approach to streamline and facilitate the management of the companys software programs and documentation. First we supplemented inadequate vendor documentation with an Installation Guide, Getting Started instructions and Tip & Tricks. Then we automated the administration of the system by replacing a series of complex command line procedures with a simple and easy to use Web based menu. This was accomplished via programming in Perl, Visual Basic and ASP.
At the conclusion of our project our client has a simple, automated system. We reduced administrative time requirements by about 15 hours a week. An employee manages the new system in just a few hours a week. Were out of a job, temporarily. They can run the deliverable without us, but, like most of our clients, theyll ask us back for the next job.
